what's the role about?

Footballco is looking for a dynamic leader to drive the next phase of newsroom growth — primarily on goal.com as well as our portfolio of local brands. You will be owning audience growth & engagement across our website, apps, and new platforms. This is a rare opportunity to lead established brands (goal.com, the world’s largest digital football publisher), cult brands in growth mode (MUNDIAL Magazine), and digital football publishers outside the UK (Voetbalzone, Calciomercato, Spox). This executive role has a global remit and will be a leader for our editorial news teams numbering over 100 full time staff in 17 countries around the world. This is, by multiple measures, the biggest job in digital football media.

In this role, you will be shaping our identity every day by leading teams to write, curate, report, and create the best news and content for our audiences. The ultimate goal is clear — transform our brands into an essential follow for the next generation of football fans. You must be able to set a vision for audience growth and development of these brands as well as get your hands dirty to make stuff happen.  We are a growing start up and need a leader who’s a do-er; not a figurehead. You must be an expert in football news, reporting, and content, as well as modern digital distribution methods including SEO, newsletters, app engagement strategies, social media, and more. You will be leading a very large team unified by their mission to engage audiences with great football content everyday — by publishing in new ways and by publishing better on our properties. You will be in a position of enormous influence, managing a large budget, travelling globally to build our culture, and making key new hires to grow your division. 

your duties
  • Manage and oversee all written editorial output (news, reporting, for Goal.com staff and Footballco portfolio brands). Develop a clear and concrete strategy to grow and engage audiences, measure performance in all markets, hit KPIs, and drive brand transformation to ensure UUs, PVs, and other KPIs are met.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with executive stakeholders across Editorial, Product, Strategy, Finance, and Sales to develop and execute data-driven publishing plans that are consistent with the brand’s global editorial mission across a variety of platforms — all while maximising audience monetization.

  • Create, develop, and assign content in collaboration with Footballco’s other regional editorial leaders, worldwide reporters, and correspondents in every major club around the world. Own Footballco’s news and content strategy. Partner closely with our SEO and insights team to ensure your strategies are informed by data, measured, and designed to succeed with audiences.

  • Lead and inspire your team. Encourage creativity and experimentation. Instil an ethos where testing new content strands becomes part of regular output.

  • Manage a large budget with rigour and efficacy. Understand how to use that budget to drive change in the organisation, unlock creativity, remove roadblocks, and more.

  • Develop a vision for the future of football journalism and content. How can media companies make reporting relevant to younger consumers? What does the “correspondent of the future” look like? How do we establish new on-the-ground reporting methods that bring fans closer to the game? What role should we play at major tournaments like the World Cup or Women’s Euros? What subjects beyond the 90 mins drive fan interest?

  • Finally, this job is focused on football. Expert knowledge of the English premier league is a must. Knowledge of European football is important. Knowledge of other global leagues will be useful. Beyond knowledge of the sport, it is vital that you have a love for football culture on and off the pitch – apparel, fan culture, music, gaming…

your skills
  • Extensive experience as a journalist, editor, or content leader — ideally covering football. Detailed knowledge of the media & football industry, with an emphasis on understanding digital publishing models and strategies, specifically as it relates to building digital audiences via SEO. We are open to candidates with professional content experience and a personal passion for football but who do not have a professional experience in football.

  • Excellent news sense and journalistic instinct, with expertise in the English Premier League and world football. Think big. We are looking for someone who has strong opinions on where football is going next.

  • Numerate and data-driven. You must possess a strong working knowledge of Google Analytics to succeed in this role. Proficient in major social and web analytics tools is a plus, such as Crowd Tangle, Looker, MOAT, Social Blade, Conviva, creator studios on major social platforms, and more.

  • Proven management and operational skills. You need experience building, coaching, and transforming teams, ideally in multiple regions around the world. At your level, success is measured by the teams working beneath you. You add value by helping them operate more efficiently and devising winning strategies to hit KPIs.

  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage remote teams is required. This includes an ability to influence and present to people on all levels. You must be able to clearly articulate analyses to your remote teams as well as all levels of management, including C-suite executives.

  • Commercial acumen and ability to cater for commercial requirements. This is not a commercial or advertising job but as an executive leader of the company’s largest team you hold significant influence on the financial performance of the company.

  • Entrepreneurial, digitally savvy, with exceptional analytical, quantitative, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. This is not a big company where everything is given to you; it’s a small company where you’re given a budget and the freedom to build awesome stuff.

  • Finally, we have staff in 17 countries who speak many languages besides English. Working proficiency in multiple languages is a plus.
