What’s the role about?We are hiring an Assistant Editor. The successful candidate will assist in running the news desk and be responsible for sourcing, commissioning and sub-editing stories. As well as managing a small team on shift, they will understand what our readers are interested in and write engaging headlines, create imagery, send app notifications and manage the homepage. They will also write news and SEO articles, plus opinion and analysis features on the game’s most important topics
This position is based in New York. We offer competitive compensation and a bonus scheme.
What You'll be doing?Run GOAL’s English news desk and manage a small team of writers on any given shift
Source news and SEO stories, write headlines, sub-edit copy, create imagery and publish articles using our content management system
Send app notifications for our best stories and manage our homepages
Write news and SEO stories, primarily focused on English and US soccer
Occasionally write long-form features, primarily focused on US soccer
Stay on top of trends and topics of interest among our US audience
What you have?Ability to lead a small team of freelancers and communicate effectively with our club writers
Have an eye for what makes a good news story and what topics have SEO potential
Be able to write engaging headlines and app notification copy
Experience of sub-editing and being able to spot mistakes and improve copy
Using a content management system to publish articles and manage our homepages
Ability to create composite images using our content editing suite
Strong knowledge of both European and US soccer
Write clean and accurate news and SEO stories, mainly on English and US soccer
Ability to generate and deliver feature ideas, particularly on US soccer
Desirable:
Language skills
An interest in analytics, data, and using data to drive insights and performance
